- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping stated his wish for a peaceful referendum in Sudan and a resolution to the conflict in Darfur. Xinhua: “No matter what results the referendum were, China believed the top priority lay in maintaining peace and stability in Sudan and the region, Xi said at a meeting with visiting Sudanese Foreign Minister Ahmed Ali Karti.”
- Guinea’s electoral process has faced setback after setback, most recently the unexpected death of the head of its electoral commission.
- In Nigeria, members of Boko Haram, along with other prisoners, recently broke free of prison in Bauchi. Authorities say some 120 inmates have returned, and two escapees have been re-arrested, as have ten Boko Haram members in a separate incident.
